3 INJURED IN ACCIDENT – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 380 in Bridgeport just before 10:30 p.m. Friday. Martina Rodriguez, 47, of Bridgeport was driving a Ford Explorer westbound in the 1200 block of U.S. 380 when it was hit on the driver’s side by a Dodge pickup that was attempting to cross 380 at Lawdwin Avenue. Bridgeport Police Chief Randy Singleton said the impact flipped the Explorer on its side, and it slid about 75 feet down 380, stopping just west of the first entrance to the Brookshire’s parking lot. The driver of the pickup, Larry Baker III, 21, of Runaway Bay, and his daughter, almost 2 years old, were not injured. Rodriguez was transported to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. Her husband, Saul Rodriguez, 47, was riding in the front passenger seat of the Explorer, and he suffered the most serious injuries. He was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. A 7-year-old female passenger was transported by ground ambulance to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, and a 13-year-old male passenger was uninjured.
DIRT BIKE ACCIDENT – A Forestburg man was flown to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth Friday night after wrecking his dirt bike and suffering a head injury. Jerry Walters was riding about 11 p.m. with two other men on County Road 2622 near Slidell. Among the three men, there were two dirt bikes and one all-terrain vehicle. According to DPS spokesman Lonny Haschel, Walters’ front tire hit the back tire of the ATV. Walters was trying to avoid the accident and ended up jumping from the bike. He was not wearing a helmet.
NEWARK HOUSE FIRE – The cause of a house fire in Newark that displaced seven people is unknown, said Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard. The two-story structure in the 200 block of County Road 4847 caught fire just after noon Friday and is a total loss. Jack and Sue Kennan lived in the home with their five grandchildren, ages 9, 7, 5, 4 and 3. Firefighters from five departments – Newark, Rhome, Boyd, Haslet and Eagle Mountain – battled the blaze. Beard said after the fire appeared to be under control, some crews were pulled out to take a break. One crew was left inside, and it was then that the fire flared on the second floor. “With the heat and the condition of the structure, the circumstances deteriorated,” said Beard. “The guys did a good job, but they had to pull everyone out at that point. It wasn’t safe to have anyone inside.” No firefighters were seriously injured, but Beard said there were a few treated by Wise County medics for heat exhaustion. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family.
