STATE CHAMPIONS – The Decatur Lady Eagles won the Class 3A state volleyball title Saturday afternoon at the Culwell Center in Garland. In their first-ever state tournament appearance, they swept the Bellville Brahmanettes 25-21, 25-18, 27-25, and junior Cooper Martin was named MVP. EAGLES WIN AREA – The Decatur Eagles powered through the Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins Eagles 48-7 Friday night to win the Region II 3A Division 1 Area football title at Mustang-Panther Field in Grapevine. Decatur moves to 9-3 for the season and will play the Chapel Hill Bulldogs 7:30 p.m. Friday at Forney High School. Tickets can be purchased at the high school ticket office until noon today and 8 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. tomorrow. Prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students. All tickets will be $8 at the gate. WINTER WEATHER – Forecasters’ predictions of bleak winter weather fell flat in Wise County this weekend. Precipitation was less than predicted, and only bridges and overpasses became icy. Rainfall totals include .43 inches in Rhome, .3 inches in Greenwood, .35 in Alvord and .28 in Decatur. Numerous minor accidents were reported early Monday morning, mostly on bridges and overpasses, but roads were clear. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by noon. Some local school districts were already closed for the Thanksgiving holiday but those in session started on time. County offices will open at 10 a.m.
VACANT HOME BURNS – As Update was going to press, firefighters were in the mop up stage at a house fire on 13th St. in Bridgeport. It was reported just before 7 a.m., and Bridgeport, Decatur, Lake Bridgeport and Paradise fire departments were called to battle the blaze. The vacant house was for sale. HOUSE FIRE – A Crafton home was damaged Sunday morning when the chimney caught fire and quickly spread to the attic. Crafton, Sand Flat and Chico volunteer fire departments were called to 1787 CR 1895 about 10:45 a.m. Homeowner Alvin Hall told a Wise County dispatcher that a fire in his fireplace had spread to his living room. “Yesterday I had no electricity [for a period of time], and it was cold so I kept my fireplace going,” he said. Hall was not injured in the fire. Sand Flat Fire Chief Kenny Carnley said damage was confined to one end of the single-story, wooden structure, and in addition to heat and smoke damage, there was also water damage to the drywall. Wise County’s Medic 2 and Sunset Volunteer Fire Department were also on scene.
FREE LUNCHES – The Bridgeport Middle School Student Council is serving free lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day this week at Harwood Park. Students and adults are welcome to come eat.
STOCKINGS FOR SOLDIERS – Shear Madness, located at 1208 Farm Road 51 South in Decatur, is a drop off point for items being collected for North Texas Stockings for Soldiers. The stockings will be shipped to deployed soldiers and be personally distributed to all the inpatients at the Dallas VA Hospital. Items needed include body wash (small bottles), lotion, sunscreen, Chapstick, razors, baby wipes …(small packages), non-melting candy, candy canes, cookies, jerky, crackers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sunglasses, playing cards, word search books, signed Christmas cards and powdered drink mixes. Food and drink items must be in individual wrappers. The deadline to return the items is Wednesday, Nov. 27. SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS – Bridgeport Spirit of Christmas Angel Trees are up at The Community Bank, Citibank and Bridgeport High School. Donations are being accepted now through Friday, Dec. 13, and will be used to provide vouchers for local families, giving them the opportunity to shop for their children’s Christmas toys and clothes.
OPRY TONIGHT – The Gospel Opry Sing-along is 7 tonight at the G.C. Rann Theater in the Wise County Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St., in Decatur. Admission is free. An offering will be taken to go toward the expenses of the museum.
LIBRARY HOURS – Bridgeport Public Library will be open regular hours Monday through Wednesday and closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday Thursday through Sunday. Regular storytimes will be held Wednesday with a Thanksgiving theme.
FUNERALS – Funeral for Hattie Smith Josserand, 78, of Fort Worth, formerly of Rhome, is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Westwind Church in Keller with entombment at Garden of Memories Mausoleum. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home in Fort Worth.
