DECATUR STRUCTURE FIRE — As Update was going to press, Decatur, Bridgeport and Alvord fire departments were on the scene of a house fire in the 500 block of West Walnut Street in Decatur. FRIDAY WRECK VICTIM REMAINS HOSPITALIZED — A motorcyclist struck by a pickup truck in Bridgeport Friday remains hospitalized in Fort Worth, but his condition has improved to stable. Douglas Campbell, 48, of Chico was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital from the scene of the accident in which he sustained injuries to the head and torso area. According to witnesses, Campbell was traveling westbound on the outside lane of Hovey Street when the white pickup pulled out from the south entrance to the James Wood Neighborhood Autos car lot. Campbell laid the bike down and skidded 20 yards before colliding with the left front end of the pickup. Bridgeport police and fire departments and Wise County medics and sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident, which occurred just before 6 p.m.
IT’S THAT TIME — Several grass fires broke out across the county over the weekend. Perhaps the most threatening was a hayfield fire that charred a few acres, a hay baler and several bales of hay just before noon Saturday near Sandy Creek, off of Cuba Road east of Bridgeport. Bridgeport, Decatur and Paradise firefighters responded to the blaze, which was reported just before 11 a.m. and was extinguished and mopped up by 3 p.m. No structures were involved.
HELP FOR FIRE VICTIMS — The local office for the American Red Cross is accepting donations on behalf of the Belcher family today. Melanie Belcher and her three children lost their home and all of their belongings in a fire last Tuesday night. ARC assisted the family with their immediate needs the night of the fire, but Wendy Graham, Red Cross disaster action team captain for Wise and northern Parker counties, will be at the Red Cross office 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today to accept donations of clothing, household items, cash and gift cards on behalf of Ms. Belcher. Graham is also providing a notebook for those who would like to write a note to the family. Clothing is needed in the following sizes: Melanie wears a plus size, 4X and size 11 shoe. Her son, Jesse, wears a boys size 14 and size 9 shoe. He likes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Melanie’s daughter, Sarah, wears girls size 7/8 and wears a size 2 shoe. She likes Monster High and Hello Kitty. The baby, Hope, wears size 9 months in clothes and size 2 diapers. Graham said gift cards would be helpful to purchase formula. The local Red Cross office is on Mill Street in Decatur at the back of Wise Area Relief Mission, by the loading dock. For more information, email Graham at email@example.com.

In previous meetings, Superintendent Monty Chapman said preliminary budget numbers showed the district heading into the 2013-2014 school year in the hole by as much as $300,000. Some major adjustments are anticipated to balance the bottom line, even with the restoration of some previously eliminated state funding.
