CHILD FOUND ALONE – Wise County sheriff’s deputies have child endangerment warrants against the parents of a 2-year old boy found alone in a room heated by a space heater Saturday afternoon on County Road 4797. Deputies had received a welfare concern call at the house and looked in a back window and saw the child in a crib. He was taken to Wise Regional Health System, and deputies called child protection services. Sheriff David Walker said Sunday that the parents contacted officers later Saturday night. Walker said CPS workers took “temporary custody” of the child and his 5-year-old brother Sunday. Walker said that no arrests had been made as of late Sunday afternoon.
LARGE SCALE POWER OUTAGE – Electricity customers from Tarrant County up to Wichita Falls lost power Sunday afternoon. Sabrina Easley with Oncor said a piece of damaged equipment affected a 138,000-volt transmission line, which carries electricity from the generation source to the substations. The line also serves some Brazos Electric customers and co-ops as well, including Wise Electric Co-op. Reports of power outages began around 4 p.m., and power was restored to the last customer by 6:20, Easley said. About 10,000 meters were affected in Wise County, Easley said.
DECATUR FIREFIGHTERS HONORED – Ryan Davis was honored as the Decatur Firefighter-of-the-Year Saturday night at the department’s annual honors banquet at the Decatur Civic Center. Earlier Davis had received a community service award for spending 1,492 volunteer hours at the department in the past year. Rookie-of-the-Year honors went to Jason Daniel and the fire officer of the year award went to Captain Chris Caster. Kyle Stephens, who has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 25 years, was promoted to Administrative Services Captain, and honored with the department’s exemplary customer service award. Keller Fire Chief David Jones was keynote speaker for the event. Bridgeport and Jacksboro firefighters provided protection for the city during the banquet.
SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCH – Seniors 55 and older are invited to enjoy lunch, fellowship and games at noon Thursday at the Decatur Senior Center located at 1200 N. Miller Street. For more information call the center at (940) 627-2926.
EBOOK HELP DESK – The Decatur Public Library will host an eBook Help Desk 1-3 p.m. Wednesday. If you have a question about using your e-reader to check out e-books from the library, call (940) 393-0290 to sign up for your 15-minute, one-on-one session. This event is free and open to the public, though sign-up is required.
LVN-RN NURSING PROGRAM – Weatherford College Wise County is accepting applications for the Licensed Vocational Nursing to Registered Nursing program through Jan. 31. The one-year program begins in May. Information packets and applications can be obtained in person on the WCWC campus, by phone at (940) 627-2690, or by e-mail at email@example.com.
HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – The Wise County Animal Shelter will be closed today for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It will reopen 8 a.m. Tuesday. All administrative county offices will be closed today as well as the Decatur dumpsite. The Boyd, Chico, and Cottondale dumpsites will close on Wednesday.
CHAMBER LUNCHEON – The Decatur Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly luncheon 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at the Decatur Civic Center. The yearly installation luncheon will include introducing the newly elected board members and recognizing the outgoing board. Call the Decatur Chamber of Commerce today to RSVP at (940) 627-3107.
CHICO SCHOOL BOARD – The Chico School Board meets 6:30 tonight in Chico Elementary School Room 150. Agenda items include an Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) public hearing, a report on the December resignation of high school principal Rosie Rosebure and the annual superintendent evaluation.
