BRIDGEPORT’S BEST – Mills Shallene was named the Outstanding Citizen at the Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet Saturday. Shallene works for First Financial Bank in Bridgeport; serves on the board of directors of several local organizations including the Chamber and Bridgeport Education Foundation; and spearheaded The Wise County Firefighter Relief Benefit last spring that raised more than $190,000 for local departments. The Chamber also presented Dr. Jeff Williams of Bridgeport Animal Hospital the Dr. Hunter Humanitarian award for his involvement with local youth; Sylvia Elenburg of The Community Bank the presidential award and named Jeff Smith with Brookshire’s Director of the Year. The food and pharmacy store was also recognized as Corporate Business of the Year for the second-straight year. Ink ‘N’ Stitch was named Individual Business of the Year.
WISE COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DAYS – Local officials and citizens are in Austin today and tomorrow for Wise County Legislative Days. The event gives local residents a chance to visit with our state senator and representative on issues affecting Wise County. WEEKEND RAIN, AND CHANCES FOR MORE – Weekend rainfall totals included 1 inch in Rhome, 0.9 in Greenwood, 0.88 in Decatur, 0.7 in Bridgeport and 0.5 in Alvord and Chico. The National Weather Service is calling for a 70 percent chance of rain this evening, and the chances increase to 80 percent for tomorrow.
LADY BULLDOGS, PANTHERS ADVANCE – The Alvord Lady Bulldogs beat the Paradise Lady Panthers 66-47 Friday to secure second place in district and advance to the playoffs. Paradise will also advance as the third place team. Both teams will return to action Tuesday at Fort Worth Brewer High School. Paradise will take on Maypearl at 6:30 p.m., and Alvord will play Grandview at 8.
SOFTBALL TRY-OUTS – Try-outs for Wise County Crush select softball team are Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17, at the Decatur High School softball field. Sessions for girls 10U are 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday or 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday; 12U is 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday or 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Registration is 30 minutes before each session.
