ANOTHER QUAKE FELT IN WISE – The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.8-magnitude earthquake about a mile south of Springtown at 10:54 p.m. Saturday night, according to a report by WFAA television. The quake was felt by people in southern Wise County, including Rhome, Newark and Boyd, according to posts on the Messenger Facebook page. The quake came almost exactly one week after a 3.6-magnitude tremor near Azle that could be felt as far away as Decatur.
SANTA ON A FIRETRUCK – Santa began his annual tour of Decatur neighborhoods with his Decatur Fire Department escort last night. His visit continues at 5 tonight in neighborhoods south of Walnut Street and north of Hale Street in the downtown area. Santa will continue visiting parts of Decatur through Thursday.
FAREWELL RECEPTION – The Bridgeport Economic Development Corp. board of directors will hold a farewell reception for William Myers, outgoing executive director, 4-6 p.m. Friday at Sagebrush Cafe in Bridgeport.
HOLIDAY FUN NIGHT - Northwest’s Prairie View Elementary in Rhome will hold Holiday Fun Night Tuesday. At 6 p.m., the fourth and fifth grade students will present the holiday choir concert “Dear Santa.” The Holiday Shoppe will be open 5:30-7:30 p.m. Photos and cookies with Santa will be available for free 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the gym.
PROTECTING AGAINST THE CHILL AT CHILI’S – Chili’s in Decatur is accepting children’s gloves, mittens and hats until Christmas Eve for the needy of Wise County. Bring in the donations and hang them on the Christmas tree. For more information call any of the managers at 940-627-2519.
SCHOOL FUNDRAISER – Bridgeport Intermediate School will host a fundraiser 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bridgeport Pizza Hut. Twenty percent of the proceeds will benefit the BIS Save It or Shave It for an Outdoor Learning Center at the school.
SOCIETY CHRISTMAS DINNER – The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur, 201 E. Main. The annual Christmas Dinner will be held, and members and guests are asked to bring a rock-related item for a gift exchange.
FUEL FOR A CURE – The Cancer Center at Wise is collecting Wal-Mart gift cards in increments of $25 to help cancer patients pay for gas. Many patients travel long distances every day. Donated gift cards can be dropped off at the Center 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call Laura Tanner at 940-626-2300.
COMMISSIONERS MEET TODAY – Wise County commissioners will meet starting at 8:45 this morning with a public hearing on establishing one or more County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zones. This is part of the process for county officials to claim money from the state for repair of roads that have been impacted by the oil and gas industry. Almost every county in the state qualified for some financial assistance, but each county must go through a lengthy application process. According to a funding formula outlined in Senate Bill 1747, Wise County is eligible to receive $2,177,665. In their regular 9 a.m. meeting, commissioners will discuss courthouse security and will consider a policy allowing non-profit organizations to use the Wise County Fairgrounds at no charge. Both the public hearing and the regular meeting are in the third-floor conference room of the Wise County Courthouse in Decatur.

GRAVESIDE service for James Ray Carter, 70, formerly of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oaklawn Cemetery. Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.
MEMORIAL service for Lena Pearl Elliott, 94, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Bridgeport, is 10:30 a.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
SERVICE for Anthony Fuller, 55, of Paradise is pending at Hawkins-Bridgeport.
