FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL – The summer break is over, and students in the Bridgeport, Chico, Decatur and Slidell school districts return to the classroom today. Watch for students walking to school, and pay attention when driving through school zones. Fall classes at Weatherford College Wise County also begin today. Students at Alvord, Northwest and Paradise schools return to the classroom tomorrow, and Boyd students head back to class on Wednesday. Features on some of the new principals around Wise County, the Region XI teacher of the year Lou Hitt and a look back at desegregation in Decatur were featured in the weekend Wise County Messenger on newsstands now.

RAIN REPORTS – Isolated showers brought rain to at least a couple of areas of Wise County Saturday. Rainfall reports included 0.4 of an inch in Chico and 0.35 in Alvord.

GOSPEL OPRY NIGHT – The public is invited to the monthly Gospel Opry at 7 tonight at the Wise County Heritage Museum in the 2nd floor G.C. Rann Little Auditorium. Admission is free, but an offering will be accepted toward operation expenses of the museum.

ALVORD SCHOOL MEETINGS – Alvord Elementary School will host its annual Title I Parent Meeting/Meet the Teacher Night at 5:30 tonight in the Alvord Elementary School Cafeteria. School supplies may be brought and dropped off in the teachers’ rooms.

FALL STORYTIMES – The Decatur Public Library will begin weekly fall storytimes for preschoolers and toddlers Wednesday. Preschool storytimes will be held Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m., and toddler storytimes will be held Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. Join them for age-appropriate stories, songs, rhymes and more. TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYMENT – Northwest ISD middle school students can pick up their Netbooks and high school students can pick up their Latitude tablets at their campus 1-5 p.m. today. Students that are unable to pick up their device today will receive their devices during the first two weeks of school.

RETIREMENT RECEPTION – Chef Gary Souder is retiring from the Decatur Civic Center, and the public is invited to a come-and-go reception for him 2-4 p.m. Thursday at the Civic Center in the Chisholm Trail Suites.

SCREENING MAMMOGRAMS – Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital’s Wellness for Life mobile health unit will offer screening mammogram events 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at Wal-Mart and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Decatur. NORTHWEST SCHOOL BOARD – Following a public hearing on the budget and tax rate, the Northwest ISD school board will consider setting a $1.425 tax rate per $100 property valuation at a meeting tonight. The board will also hear reports on July financials and staff development district effectiveness, and consider requests to waive penalty and interest on certain delinquent property tax accounts. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the board room at the NISD Administration Building, 2001 Texan Dr., just off Texas 114.

CHICO SCHOOL BOARD – The Chico School Board tonight will hold a public hearing and vote on its proposed budget and tax rate of $1.2581 per $100 valuation. The board will also approve salary and stipend schedules for the upcoming year. Other items on the agenda include the school vendor list, student transfer policy, fund balance designations, teacher appraisal calendar, designating primary and secondary teacher appraisers, a TEA-approved Innovative Course in Student Leadership, student code of conduct, student handbook, employee handbook and formation of a facilities review and planning committee. The board will also hear a Level 3 complaint by Brent Hand as well as routine monthly administrator/principal reports. The public hearing and meeting will begin at 6:30 in Room 150 at Chico Elementary School.

FUNERALS – Service for Melissa Capps, 36, of Chico is 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Chico with burial at Pleasant Grove Cemetery No. 3. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

FUNERAL for Joseph Anthony Chabert, 49, of Justin is 2 p.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Denton.
