A man was hit by a vehicle about 11 a.m. today on U.S. 287 just north of Farm Road 1810. According to a witness, the man was seen rushing out of the median in front of a southbound Chrysler Pacifica. Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins said the victim was Mark Chavez, 22, of Albuquerque, N.M. His body bounced off the Pacifica, which was driven by Lisa Workman, 49, of Chico, crushing in the windshield before he came to a rest in the middle of the road. According to the victim’s mother, Luz Rodriguez, Chavez had just jumped out of her pickup before he got hit by the other car. She said she was attempting to take him to a facility in Dallas for his drinking and drug abuse.
“I’ve seen this before,” said Decatur Police Sgt. Mike Range who was photographing the scene. “Some people don’t want to get help, and they aren’t in their right mind.”
Chavez was awake but appeared to be going through shock when medics arrived. He was transported by Wise County Medics to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. From there he was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Rodriguez had her son’s blood stains on her white pants. More blood soaked through her floral print blouse where she’d gone to help him after the tragic impact. One of his black leather shoes rested on the side of the highway, knocked about 20 feet off him. Decatur Police Department is investigating the accident. Decatur Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
