MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS – Memorial Day events begin Saturday in Wise County. Let Freedom Ring is 11 a.m. Saturday at Elm Creek Park in Alvord. The Alvord High School band will perform, and there will be National Guard and fire department equipment on display. Speakers include Bill Cleveland, pastor of First Baptist Church in Alvord; Phil Bloomer, retired military; and Jim Bloomer, who is currently serving in the military. Free hot dogs will be served, and desserts will be sold to benefit the Alvord Library Fund. A roll call to honor all past and present veterans is at 1 p.m. Brick forms will also be available. A festival at the Family Park starts at noon and will feature free hot dogs, drinks, live entertainment and a bounce house. Snow cones will be sold. The Wise County Veterans Group will conduct its annual Memorial Day program 10 a.m. Monday at the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park, 406 N. Trinity, in Decatur. Guest speaker is U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry, and special recognition will be given to World War II veterans in the group.

MEMORIAL DAY CLOSINGS – All Wise County administrative offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. The Decatur dumpsite will be closed Monday. The Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will close on Wednesday. The City of Bridgeport offices and Library will close at noon today and reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. The Bridgeport Library will reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday. ANIMAL SHELTER CLOSED – The Wise County Animal Shelter will observe Memorial Day and be closed Saturday.

QUARTER AUCTION – A quarter auction benefiting Wise Area Relief Mission is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bridgeport Community Center. Entry fee is $2, and items cost only a few quarters. BAKE SALE – North Texas Bank will hold a bake sale today to benefit the Military Warriors Support Foundation that will be awarding homes to five worthy veterans at the June 8 J.W. Hart PBR Challenge.

NORTON BENEFIT CONCERT AND DINNER – A benefit for the family of Haven Norton of Springtown is Sunday afternoon at Branded Cross Cowboy Church in Boyd. Several bands will play beginning at 12:30 and continuing through the afternoon. A silent auction will be held, and a plate dinner will be served for $5. Bring your lawn chair. Norton, 10, was killed in an accident May 13.

MISSION TRIP SALE – An estate sale will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. today and Saturday at 408 County Road 4191 in Decatur. A plate dinner will also be served Saturday for $5. All proceeds will benefit a mission trip to Africa.

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Due to the Memorial Day holiday, county commissioners will meet Tuesday instead of Monday next week. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the third-floor conference room of the courthouse in Decatur.

BALLET PERFORMANCE – Wise Performing Arts Guild’s ballet production of “The Arabian Nights” has sold out its Saturday, June 15 performance. A limited number of tickets to the Friday, June 14 performance are still available. For ticket orders or more information email wpagticketcenter@gmail.com.

FUNERALS – Graveside service for L. Wayne “Bus” Renshaw, 85, formerly of Rhome is 1 p.m. today at Aurora Cemetery. Family visitation is 10:30-11:30 a.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

GRAVESIDE service for Marvin Potter, 85, of Decatur is 1 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery in Decatur. Family visitation is 7-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins.

GRAVESIDE service for Nancy Karlene Heithecker, 75, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Cemetery No. 1 in Decatur. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

MEMORIAL service for Tom Hall, 59, of Runaway Bay is 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Runaway Bay Community Church. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Jimmy Richards, 55, of Decatur will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Decatur. He was the son of Jim and Catherine Richards of Decatur. Family visitation from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.

SERVICE for Jan Meredith Mann Gettys, 89, of Decatur will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family visitation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.
