KICKING OFF THE SEASON – Although the temperatures still feel like summer, one hallmark of fall begins today: Friday night high school football. Six of the seven Wise County teams will begin their season tonight and another one on Saturday. Tonight’s games include Decatur at Trinity Christian, Alvarado at Bridgeport, Gunter at Boyd, Alvord at Millsap, Paradise at Grandview and Grand Prairie at Northwest. On Saturday, Chico will play in Frost. All games begin at 7:30 p.m. Scores will be posted throughout the night at www.wcmessenger.com/scores. Live blogging will be available for the Bridgeport and Decatur games at the same link. Full recaps of tonight’s games will be featured in the Saturday Wise County Messenger.

NO COMMENT – The Decatur Water Board held a public hearing Wednesday afternoon on the district’s proposed $1.4 million budget and tax rate of 12.75 cents and there were no comments from citizens. The tax rate is the same as this year. The Wise County Water Supply District, an entity of the City of Decatur, purchases water from the Tarrant Regional Water District and supplies it to the city’s treatment plant on U.S. 380, west of the sheriff’s office.

BLOOD DRIVE – Wise Regional Health System will hold a Carter BloodCare blood drive 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Fit-N-Wise in Decatur. For more information call Annette Raley at (940) 626-0167.

VETERANS BREAKFAST – The Wise County Veterans Group will meet for breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Yesterdays in Bridgeport. All veterans are invited.

GOSPEL CONCERT – The Rick & Roll Band will perform a free gospel concert at 11 a.m. next Sunday, Sept. 8, at the New Hope Fellowship Church located approximately 2 miles north of Chico on Texas 101.

BENEFIT DINNER – Tickets for the Second Annual GoGo Gumbo Pasta Dinner on Oct. 13 can be purchased at First Financial Bank in Decatur and Boyd and iCopy of Decatur. Tickets are $20, and proceeds will benefit the South Wise Services Pantry. Seating times are 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. Seating is limited.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE – Wise County Development Services and the Decatur dumpsite will close on Monday. Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will be closed the next business day on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

MEMORIAL service for Ruby Pearl Robertson, 90, of Rhome is 6 tonight at Renewal Fellowship Church in Boyd. Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd is handling arrangements.
