A Wise County jury Friday recommended community service rather than jail time for Fernando Cantu Jr., 33, of Bridgeport. The jury deliberated for 30 minutes before returning a verdict of 180 days in state jail and probation. Moments later, visiting Judge Elizabeth Berry sentenced Cantu to 180 days in jail, probated for two years. On Thursday, Cantu was found guilty of negligently causing bodily injury to a 4 1/2-month-old child. He was originally indicted on a first degree felony charge of injury to a child with the intention of causing serious bodily injury.
