The Boyd Yellowjackets came back to earth with a crushing loss to Pilot Point last week. Now they try to get back on track Friday against a team that won the district title a year ago.
Boyd (1-5, 1-1) tangles with the Callisburg Wildcats (4-1, 0-1) Friday at Yellowjacket Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
“We started off well, but then the wheels fell off,” Boyd head coach Brandon Hopkins said. “They showed us a defense that they hadn’t showed before. We had chances to take advantage, but one guy would make the play.”
Pilot Point exposed some things that Boyd is trying to improve on as they prepare for Callisburg this week.
“We’ve made a few changes to get better.” Hopkins said.
The Wildcats showed spread against Boyd last season and then switched to a wishbone look. They have stuck with that running style offense in 2013.
Callisburg is averaging 316 rushing yards per game, led by quarterback Rheyce Childress with 481 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He’s averaging over nine yards per carry.
“He’s [Childress] a good operator of the offense,” Hopkins said. “They’ve got three backs that all do their job.”
Callisburg’s lone district loss came to Pilot Point, 20-17. They are coming off a bye week, having had a couple of weeks to prepare for the Yellowjackets.
“We’ve got to be more physical this week,” Hopkins said. “We’ve been more physical in practice this week. We’ve also got to play assignment football to slow them down.”
Boyd had two league wins going into their bye week last year, and Hopkins knows this is an important one to get.
“It would be nice to get this one,” Hopkins said. “This is a big game and we’ve got to be ready to play. It would be nice having the confidence after a win going into our bye week.”
