With their win over Paradise, the Boyd Yellowjackets assured themselves of at least third place in District 5-2A Division I.
With a win this week they can grab a share of the district championship and possibly improve their seeding in the playoffs.
Boyd (4-5, 4-1) wraps up the regular season against the Whitesboro Bearcats (8-1, 5-0) Friday at Bearcat Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
A win would put the Yellowjackets in a three-way tie with Whitesboro and Pilot Point for the district championship, but would still keep them as the third seed in the playoffs.
A win by 14 or more points would put the three teams into a coin-flip situation for the top three seeds.
“The main thing is to get a win,” Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins said. “If we win we’re still tied for the district championship and that would be accomplishing one of our goals.”
Whitesboro will be the stiffest test Boyd has seen in league play. The Bearcats rushing attack is led by senior Collin Kilcrease, who is averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He’s also scored 14 touchdowns.
“He’s a heck of a runner,” Hopkins said. “He was our district’s offensive MVP last season. The have a lot of playmakers and their offensive line is huge. It’s going to be a tough game, but I like our chances.”
Boyd’s offense will be tested too, as Whitesboro has only allowed 31 points in five district games.
But Boyd senior running back Fino Cardona will challenge them. Cardona had another strong game against Paradise with 290 yards rushing, giving him 1,525 on the season.
“We’ve just go to stay consistent,” Hopkins said. “Our offensive line continues to get better.”
The Bearcats have won seven straight and are coming off a 48-14 victory over Callisburg. Despite their success the last couple of years, Whitesboro is still in search of the school’s first playoff victory.
