The UIL on Tuesday made things official. They will add classifications and playoff teams along with expanding a few sports to new classes.

Some of these changes will take effect beginning next school year.

Michael Williams, Texas’ Commissioner of Education, approved the amendments earlier this week.

One of the biggest changes for this area will be the addition of a fourth playoff team in Classes 3A and 2A from each district in football, baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball starting in the 2013-2014 school year.

Class 3A will be splitting into two football divisions.

The addition of another team to the 3A Division I football playoffs will push its championship game back in line with other football finals.

Class 3A will also add team tennis and soccer. Currently 3A schools are forced to compete at the 4A level in soccer and tennis.

Class 6A will be created beginning with the 2014-16 realignment. The current Class A will be split into two separate classes and the other classes will each move up one; so what is now 5A will become 6A.
