Two Decatur Lady Eagles made their state meet debut after their performances at the Class 3A Region II Meet in Commerce Saturday.
Sophomore Nicole Neighbors and junior Haley Dennard punched their ticket to Austin for the University Interscholastic League’s state meet May 10-11.
Neighbors qualified in the 100 and 300 hurdles. She captured the silver medal in both events.
“I’m just excited to have this opportunity to go and compete at state,” Neighbors said. “To have this experience for the next couple of years is just a great feeling.”
Despite a shaky start in the 300, Neighbors went on to record a personal best time of 45.77.
“My goal was to break 46 [seconds], and I did that today,” she said.
Neighbors found an extra gear in the final 100 meters to pull ahead and clinch the second spot.
A little earlier she did the same, in the 100 hurdles claiming second place.
Dennard wrapped up an exciting day, too, with a gold medal in the 800 meters.
After struggling her freshman year and not running last season, everything came together for the junior in 2013.
“It’s really a good feeling-it’s surreal,” Dennard said after her win. “It’s exciting because you’re not really sprinting, and at the end you just give it all you have. The 800 is a hard race.”
