Gabi Buchanan is making a habit of spending her spring breaks in Corpus Christi.
The Decatur junior is heading south for the second straight year, after earning a spot in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet March 16.
Buchanan qualified when she took second at the Region 6 Division II meet in Wylie. Her total of 925, competing in the 220-class, was her best overall finish.
Last season, Buchanan came away with a sixth-place finish at the state meet, and she believes that experience will benefit her this time around.
“It will help me quite a bit,” Buchanan said. “There will be some girls that haven’t been there before, and I’ll be competing against some of the same girls as last year.”
She added that the atmosphere at the state scene was nothing like what she expected.
“It was interesting. I expected it to be a lot more crazy, but it wasn’t,” she said. “It went a lot smoother than I thought.”
Decatur coach Tim Mynarcik said the experience Buchanan picked up can’t be underrated.
“It’s an edge. It’s going to be a plus for her this year,” he said. “The facility is the same, nothing is going to look different, and any butterflies she had last year I don’t think will be there this year.”
Since 2001, Decatur coach Tim Mynarcik has sent either a boy or a girl to state. He’s excited to keep that tradition going.
“I tell our kids that our goal is to always get to regionals then to state,” Mynarcik said. “The other meets are just a process to get there.
“They make it to regionals or state, and their name gets put up on the wall. I’m excited to get back to that level that we strive for.”
Buchanan and her family will make the most out of the situation. Her mom and sister have been cheering her on the past couple of months for the opportunity to get to back to Corpus Christi.
Last year’s trip was the first time Buchanan had ever gotten to a beach. This time around she is going to spend a little extra time in the sun.
“I’m going to fly down on Wednesday and spend time with my mom and sister, who will already be down there,” she said. “They are really excited. They had this planned out for months. I have a pretty exciting family.”
