For the first time in school history, the Northwest Texans are returning to the postseason for a second straight year.
With a win over Richland last week, the Texans assured themselves of a place in the state playoffs, despite what happens Thursday.
Northwest (7-2, 4-2) takes on the Keller Central Chargers (5-4, 4-2) Thursday at Keller ISD Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
“We’ve never made the playoffs two years in a row, so that is a huge deal around here,” Northwest head coach Bill Patterson said. “The next step is to win a playoff game. We’re looking to finish out the regular season Thursday on a good note and gain some momentum.”
The Texans exited in the first round last year. They will get another opportunity to make history next week.
Northwest and Fossil Ridge are the Division II representatives out of District 4-5A, while Keller Central and Southlake Carroll will go Division I.
The Texans still need a win against the Chargers to be the first seed in Division II.
“They have a very good defense, the best we’ve seen since Southlake,” Patterson said of Central. “It’ll be a challenge to move the ball. Their offense has struggled, but I expect it to be a low-scoring game.”
Another good start is what the Texans will be looking for. They jumped out to a 21-0 lead on Richland, and against a good defense it’ll be good to get something on the board early.
With playoffs approaching, Patterson knows another win would be huge for his team’s confidence.
“The kids understand what’s at stake,” Patterson said. “Since our first practice in August we’ve talked about getting back to the playoffs.”
