Missed opportunities bite ‘Jackets

By Messenger Staff | Published Saturday, September 14, 2013

The turning point in Boyd’s 41-13 loss at Godley Friday night may have come in the first quarter.

After the home Wildcats scored first to go up 7-0, the Yellowjackets started off their first drive of the night with a 33-yard loss on a fumble.

But Fino Cardona got 17 of those yards back on the next play, and a couple of face mask penalties on Godley moved the ball into Wildcat territory.

Quarterback Clay Barnett got sacked for a 15-yard loss, then a holding call against Godley gave five of those back.

But a few plays later, Barnett was sacked again, this time for nine yards. A fourth-down try failed and the ‘Jackets came up empty, giving Godley the ball on their own three yard line with just over a minute to play in the opening stanza.

Godley proceeded to score three touchdowns in the second period.

A rare bright spot for the ‘Jackets came when Cardona scored on a four-yard run with 2:51 to play before halftime.

But Godley’s Dylan Portillo took the ensuing kickoff back 71 yards to restore his team’s lead.

After a Cardona fumble on the Boyd 40, Wildcat quarterback Ian Aguirre hit Johnny Davis for a touchdown on the next play and it was 27-6.

It could have been worse, as Jackson Basting stopped Godley with time expiring when he intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The Yellowjackets didn’t lie down. Cardona broke a 51-yard touchdown run with 6:30 to play in the third to make it 27-13.

Godley scored again, but Cardona picked up 20 yards on a 4th and 6 to breathe life into the team again.

Another sack, and to start the fourth quarter Boyd turned the ball over on downs again, setting Godley up at its own 26.

A five-and-a-half minute drive ended in a one-yard touchdown dive by Aguirre, and with 7 minutes left it was 41-13.

Both teams ran out the clock on their final possessions.

The loss leaves Boyd still looking for its first win at 0-3, while Godley moves to 2-1.

The ‘Jackets will return to the friendly confines of home Friday for a 7:30 homecoming match with Sanger.
