Northwest senior Kellee McCann closed her high school cross country career with a medal Saturday.
McCann finished seventh in the Class 5A race at the University Interscholastic League championships at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. She completed the 5K course in 18:28.74.
It was her best finish in three trips to the state meet. It followed her victories at the District 4-5A and Region I races. She posted five victories this fall.
“I’ve had the best season of my life,” McCann said. “This is my highest finish ever here.”
McCann couldn’t catch New Braunfels’ Paige Hofstad, who took the individual medal in 17:36.45. She beat Manvel’s Julia Heymach by 13 seconds.
“The pace was fine. It just wasn’t the pace for my legs,” McCann said. “This wasn’t the race I was looking for.”
McCann worked her way up to seventh in the last 700 meters but couldn’t get any closer.
“I did what I wanted. I wanted to make a late run but I fell off the pace,” she said.
