Martinez grabs 9-3A MVP; Decatur, Bridgeport well represented on all-district team

Bridgeport’s Omar Martinez crushed the ball at the plate and got hitters out on the mound all season long for the Bulls.

The senior batted .419 with five home runs, 39 RBI and scored 21 runs.

On the mound he went 4-2, with a 2.91 ERA, striking out 61 and walking 26.

For his efforts, Martinez was a unanimous pick for the District 9-3A Most Valuable Player. He was one of five Bulls to garner all-district honors.

Teammate Reese Read also picked up a district superlative award with being named the Offensive MVP.

He put up tremendous offensive numbers in his senior campaign. Read batted .407, with 33 RBI and a home run.

Defensively, he was just as effective, posting a 9-0 record, a 2.50 ERA and 80 strikeouts.

Krum’s Josh Reeves was named Defensive MVP and his teammate Ty Damron was Pitcher of the Year.

Sanger’s Ross Scott was named Newcomer of the Year.

Bridgeport’s Dillon Waldrep was a first-team designated hitter selection. He had a .376 average with 19 RBI.

Decatur’s Erik Elder picked up first-team pitcher honors after recording a 1.73 ERA, three wins and 60 strikeouts.

Battery mate Cain Lowe was named first-team catcher. He batted .279 with 11 RBI and caught four would-be base stealers.

Decatur’s Reid Metcalf, Austin Givens and Johnny Murillo also landed on the first team.
