The second-ranked Decatur Lady Eagles will be making a return trip to state after taking second at the Region II Cross Country Meet Saturday in Grand Prairie.
Decatur had three runners finish in the top 11 spots to help secure a place at state, where the top three teams from each region advance.
The state meet is Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, where Decatur took third a year ago. The Class 3A girls race is scheduled for 10:40 a.m.
“I tell them to enjoy the week because you’re kind of the big person on campus this week,” Decatur coach David Park said.
The Lady Eagles finished with 74 points, edging out third-place Melissa with 82. Kaufman took first with 69.
“The girls ran great,” Park said. “We’ve been second before and went down to state and took care business. I was really pleased with the way we ran.”
For the second straight week Jessica Kyle led the way for the Lady Eagles. The sophomore finished fourth with a time of 11:52.
“I knew after district we had a strong chance here at regionals,” Kyle said. “We just made sure we practiced hard so we would do well here.”
Haley Dennard was one spot behind in fifth with a time of 11:54. Afterward the senior said she knew it was going to be a tough day.
“We knew it was going to be a fight to get to state,” she said. “We’re glad now we get that chance to go out there and win it.”
Nicole Neighbors secured the 11th spot with a time of 12:08, and Morgan Haney ran 22nd with a time of 12:31.
Nancy Torres was the fifth Lady Eagle to cross the finish line, posting a 12:39 for 37th overall.
Paola Palomo ran 13:03 for 48th, and Georgina Palomo ran 53rd for 13:11.
