After a third-place finish in District 5-2A the Boyd Yellowjackets prepare to embark on their 11th straight trip to the postseason.
“We’re really proud of that,” Boyd head coach Brandon Hopkins said. “It’s neat being a part of it all the way through.”
The Yellowjackets will try to keep the playoff run going with another win this week.
Boyd (4-6) tangles with the Van Alstyne Panthers (6-4) Friday at Neal Wilson Athletic Stadium in Flower Mound. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
A 43-0 loss to Whitesboro didn’t exactly give Boyd a boost heading into the playoffs.
“We would have liked to have had some more momentum and be feeling a little bit better, but that game just got away from us quickly,” Hopkins said. “We have to regroup and get ready for Van Alstyne.
“We went into the last week with a shot at a district title so you have to feel good about that.”
The Panthers are coming off a 35-24 come-from-behind win over Farmersville. They are led by quarterback Alex Phillips, who has rushed for 1,183 yards and passed for 758.
“They are big up front. They’re the biggest team we’ve seen,” Hopkins said. “They’ll run out of the spread with a lot of designed runs for the quarterback.”
Boyd’s offense will have to try to rebound from a tough outing against Whitesboro, where they only mustered 78 yards rushing. Senior running back Fino Cardona was limited to just 66 yards.
“Offensively, we’ve got to execute better and we’ve got to play the line of scrimmage,” Hopkins said.
