Another district-opening loss for the Chico Dragons has them searching for answers as they continue district play Friday.
Like last season, the Dragons need to get one of their first three league games to have a good shot at the postseason.
Chico (4-2, 0-1) hosts the Lindsay Knights (1-5, 1-0) Friday at Dragon Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
A slow start cost the Dragons against Valley View, as they spotted the Eagles 14 points and created a hole too deep to dig out of.
“We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot and beat ourselves,” Chico head coach Stephen Carter said.
Chico will look to rebound against a Lindsay team that has struggled in 2013 but is still dangerous. The Knights picked up their first win of the season Friday in a 64-0 route of Trenton.
“I feel Lindsay is more athletic than Valley View and has more team speed,” Carter said. “We are going to have to play hard and just get after it.”
Chico put up 365 yards of offense against Valley View, but never could recover from two early turnovers. They need a much better start against the Knights.
“We have to stay ahead of the chains,” Carter said. “We’ve got to approach it as a must-win and take care of the football.”
With Collinsville next on the schedule, Carter would like to get a win Friday to take some of the pressure off for the rest of the stretch run. After losing the first three league games last season the Dragons were on the outside looking in when the postseason rolled around.
