Dragons tame Tigers to end on a win

{{{*}}}When you rush for more than 20 yards a carry, it’s tough to lose a football game.

The Chico Dragons did that Friday night, and they didn’t lose, closing their season on a win as they traveled to Trenton and throttled the winless Tigers, 43-20.

Freshman Crese Redman carried the football only six times, but gained 173 yards and scored two touchdowns. Senior Matt Carter notched three touchdowns in his final game for the Dragons, and sophomore quarterback Jericoe McGuire rushed for two more touchdowns.

The win gave Chico a 6-4 overall record (2-3 in district). Even though they missed the playoffs again, they built some positive vibes to carry them into next season with plenty of talent returning.

The Dragons were up 21-0 before the game was four minutes old, thanks to big runs by Redman (64 yards) and McGuire (53 yards) sandwiched around a four-yard blast by Carter.

Trenton finally scored on a 56-yard pass play, but the Dragons came right back and drove the ball down the field. Carter capped it with a one-yard plunge and then ran for the two-point conversion to make it 27-6 after 12 minutes.

McGuire opened the scoring in the second quarter, scampering 60 yards to cap a drive with 7:16 to play. Trenton answered with another Wiley-to-Wiley pass play for a 24-yard touchdown, but Carter sent his team into the locker room on a high note with a 64-yard run as time expired.

A one-yard Marshall Anderle run and a another touchdown for Redman, this time from 19 yards out, capped the scoring for the Dragons.

Chico dominated the stats as well as the field of play, with 14 first downs and 475 total yards to Trenton’s 180 yards and a meager five first downs.

Trenton quarterback Kezer Wiley did hit four passes for 131 yards, ending the game on another pass to Kyle Wiley with 17 seconds left.

Wiley caught all four of Trenton’s completed passes.

The win ends the season for both teams.
