After three straight losses the Chico Dragons got some redemption Friday with an impressive 64-32 win over Blue Ridge. The Dragons will miss out on the playoffs again in 2013, but another win this week over Trenton will secure a second straight six-win season.
Chico (5-4, 1-3) travels to take on the Trenton Tigers (0-9, 0-4) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday.
“It was an empty win but I’m proud of the young kids,” Chico coach Stephen Carter said about the Blue Ridge victory. “It was a good way to finish up the season at home.”
The Dragons exploded for nearly 500 yards on the ground, as they put Blue Ridge away in the second quarter.
“Our offense played well, and we shut down their running game,” Carter said. “We gave up some in the passing game, but I thought we responded well after being eliminated from the playoffs.”
Securing another six-win season shouldn’t be too much trouble for the Dragons. Trenton is winless on the season and has only scored 14 points in their four district games so far.
They are coming off a 42-6 loss to Valley View.
“They are a spread team that will try to throw it on us,” Carter said.
This will mark the 12th straight season the Dragons won’t be making a trip to the postseason. Their last trip was in 2001 when they finished 8-3.
Carter wants to use this last game for motivation going into next season.
“We still have a chance to finish the season with a winning record,” Carter said. “We fell short of our goal of making the playoffs, but I want these young kids to be in a situation where they can build excitement for next year.”
