After a week off, the Chico Dragons prepare for their biggest game of the year so far as they take on Valley View in a critical district-opening game Friday.
The Eagles have gotten the best of the Dragons the last few years, but Chico head coach Stephen Carter feels his team needs to take advantage of this early opportunity.
“If we can get a win early it takes some pressure off for Lindsay and Collinsville,” Carter said. “Our kids know the importance and have been looking forward to this game.”
Valley View (1-4) travels to Chico (4-1) Friday for a 7:30 kickoff.
The Eagles have been struggling of late after winning their season opener against Era. They’ve dropped their last four, the latest a 49-21 defeat at the hands of Nocona.
The Dragons used their down time to concentrate on Valley View – and getting kids healthy. Although some will be playing a limited role, Chico should be mostly healthy by kickoff Friday.
Carter says after looking at the video, they’re going to have to contain one guy.
“They are going to give us a heavy dose of Landon Boaz,” Carter said. “He rushed for 1,800 yards last season, and they will throw to him too.
“We’ve got to shut him down and control the line of scrimmage.”
Offensively, the Dragons look to open things up.
“I feel we can throw the ball on them some and we’ve been working on our zone read,” Carter said. “We just have to try to stay ahead of the chains.”
Chico needs a win early in district to maintain control of their own destiny. Their first two league games are at home.
