More than 30 basketball teams, including 18 varsity squads, will descend on Decatur beginning Thursday for the school’s annual three-day basketball tournament.
The action tips off at 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning when Weatherford takes on Azle. Decatur begins their play at 11:30 against Alvarado.
The Eagles play again at 7 p.m. against Canyon, before the pool play bracket starts Friday.
“There’s not a better 3A tournament in the state,” Decatur coach Drew Coffman said. “It’s a legitimate tournament, with quality opponents and a very strong field.”
It’ll be the first action in awhile for the Eagles, who had to cancel their last two games due to inclement weather.
“It’s a coach’s nightmare,” Coffman said about the forced time off. “We’ve only had four practices and one game since we got the football kids in.
“We’ve been doing some good things, but things will get tougher from here on out. We’ve been going with seven kids before we got the football guys, so they picked up a lot of experience.”
Decatur will face a lot of tough competition this weekend and Coffman says that will help prepare his team for the road ahead.
“Our region, including all classifications, is the toughest region there is,” Coffman said. “We have to get used to playing quality opponents.”
