The hope for four wins to open the season came to a quick end Friday for Chico, as the Dragons got off to a dreadful start and couldn’t recover.
With one game left before district play, they will try to right the ship this week.
Chico (3-1) hosts the Gainesville State Tornadoes (0-3) Friday at Dragon Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
“We couldn’t have played any worse,” Chico coach Stephen Carter said. “I just don’t think we were mentally prepared to play the football game,”
He hopes the 54-0 score will serve as a wake-up call for the Dragons, with the start of league play just a couple of weeks away.
“It was the best team we’ll see all year,” Carter said about Brock. “We had bad snaps, dropped snaps, penalties – you name it and it went wrong.”
Chico will have a good chance to get that fourth victory before district begins. The Tornadoes are 0-3 and are coming off a 30-14 loss to Faith Christian.
“They are a little better than they were last year,” Carter said. “Their numbers are up and they are so athletic you just never know.”
Darrion Riggs is expected to return to the Dragon lineup Friday after suffering a broken leg back in early August.
Marshall Anderle is being held out at least another week. He may return by the time Chico hosts Lindsay in two weeks.
“We’ve got to bounce back and put last week behind us,” Carter said. “Our goal is still to be a playoff team, so we just have to go out there and get it done.”
