Chico meet a powerful success

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, January 30, 2013

It was a historical day at Chico Saturday. Chico hosted a powerlifting meet with nearly 350 lifters and 27 different schools. Six Wise County schools participated.

As of now it’s the biggest powerlifting meet in the state.

Chico powerlifting coach Heath Tullous thought of the idea to host such an event and wanted an opportunity to showcase Chico.

“It was amazing,” Tullous said. “Chico has never had anything like this before. It was just great for the community and the kids.”

With so much success, Tullous is already looking forward to next year.

“After the meet we had a coaches meeting and they all wanted to be invited back,” Tullous said. “We had a great turnout and the whole thing ran really smooth.”

Apparently the Chico athletes were excited about the home meet too. The Dragons and Lady Dragons finished better than any other county school. The girls took fifth place, led by freshman Alli York’s first-place finish, and the Chico boys captured third.

Whitesboro girls took the overall title, while Graham captured the boys title.

“They took a lot of pride in it and really stepped up,” Tullous said about Chico’s performance. “The kids that medaled did a great job. They wanted to have a good meet in their house and beat the other Wise County schools.”
