Chico looks to keep rolling

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, September 11, 2013

The Chico Dragons are making it look easy in the early going this season.

They are off to a 2-0 start and look to make it 3-0 this week for the first time in the Stephen Carter tenure.

Despite two devastating injuries just before the regular season began, the Dragons (2-0) have persevered. They hope to keep it going when they battle Coram Deo Academy (2-0) Friday at Coppell. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

“We have overcome so much adversity with the injuries,” Carter said. “Our kids have really stepped up. I’m very pleased with the kids and their attitude.”

Carter felt his defense would set the tone for his team early on – and that has been the case.

The Dragons shut out Wortham last week, led by Hagen Davis’ two interceptions and 18 tackles.

“He’s a good football player,” Carter said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid that gives 100 percent every play.”

Offensively, new quarterback Jericoe McGuire has already thrown for five touchdowns and 388 yards in two games.

“He’s getting better every week,” Carter said.

Coram Deo is coming off a 24-21 win over Lake Country Christian. They are a spread team that likes to run a lot of different formations.

“They are going to try to formation us to death,” Carter said. “They will then see if we align to it.”

So far, the young Dragons have answered every question they’ve faced.

“I’m excited we’re having to play so many young kids,” Carter said. “I didn’t think we would get the results from these kids this early in the year.

“If they keep it up we’ll be fighting for a playoff spot.”
