The Chico Dragons are one of only two teams in the area to begin the season 3-0 – and with Northwest off this week, they have a chance to be the first team to 4-0.
Chico will host the Brock Eagles (2-1) in their home opener at Dragon Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Dragons have rolled through their first three opponents, outscoring them 124-32.
The offense has increased its production each game. Quarterback Jericoe McGuire is on a tear, having already thrown for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions.
His favorite target, Matt Carter, has 288 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
“This start is good for the kids after what they went through with our injuries before the season,” Chico head coach Stephen Carter said. “They did a good job of working hard, putting that behind them and moving forward.”
Chico lost team leaders Darrion Riggs and Marshall Anderle before the start of the regular season. Anderle is expected back soon and Riggs, who was thought to be lost for the season with a broken leg, now hopes to be back by the start of district Oct. 11.
“It’s healing quickly, and the doctor can’t believe it,” Carter said. “Darrion is a determined kid, and he has been hitting rehab hard.”
To keep the momentum going, the Dragons will have to take down Brock. The Eagles are coming off a 28-22 win over Booker.
“This will be by far the best team we’ve seen so far,” Carter said. “We’re going to have to dominate the line of scrimmage.”
After three games on the road to open the season, Chico now has the luxury of four straight home games.
“It’ll be exciting to finally play at home,” Carter said. “Our crowds have grown every week. I think last week was the biggest crowd we’ve seen. It’ll be nice to show off the team for the home crowd.”
