Bulls look for fresh start

By Clay Corbett | Published Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The Bridgeport Bulls are hoping to put an injury-filled and winless pre-district behind them as they begin league play this week against Krum.

Last week’s 55-0 setback to Graham was the sixth straight loss for the Bulls to begin the 2013 campaign.

But everything starts over this week for the five teams in District 9-3A.

The Krum Bobcats (2-4) come to town to take on Bridgeport (0-6) Friday at Bull Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

In more than 20 years at Bridgeport, head coach Danny Henson has never seen a year with as many season-ending injuries as this one. Five players were lost in the first three games of the season.

“It’s difficult for everybody who has worked all year long to get to the season,” Henson said. “Having kids you depend on no longer in the lineup is disruptive to the kids and coaches.”

Despite the adversity, season goals are still in place for the Bulls. Getting off to a good start this week would get them in position for a run at a district title – and there are four playoff berths available for the five-team league.

Krum has had its own share of struggles. The Bobcats are off to a 2-4 start after a nine-win season in 2012, and are coming off a 38-14 loss to Burkburnett.

Brennan Ellis leads the Krum attack and Henson says they are going to have to keep tabs on the talented runner.

“We’ve got to be good about recognizing where he lines up,” Henson said. “Offensively, we’ve got to find a good combination. We need guys to have good games and kids getting comfortable at new positions.”

Running back Dillon McCallister is expected to return this week, which should help the Bull backfield. He leads the Bulls with 183 yards this season and 4.6 yards per carry.

“We did a much better job of not turning the ball over against Graham,” Henson said. “We hope to continue that trend against Krum.”
