For the second straight week, the Boyd Yellowjackets saw victory slip through their hands.
This time Palmer snatched a 21-20 win in double-overtime, leaving players and coaches searching for answers.
The schedule won’t get any easier this week, as Boyd (0-2) travels to Godley (1-1) to take on the Wildcats. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
“It could have gone either way, it was just one of those things,” head coach Brandon Hopkins said. “Turnovers and some penalties really hurt us. The kids played hard, though.”
The injury bug struck again too, as starting wide receiver and defensive back Chris Carmona broke his ankle. He is out for the season.
Hopkins now has the task of trying to get both better and healthier during a tough two-game stretch before district.
“We could be 2-0 just as easy as 0-2,” Hopkins said. “They both were games we could have won. We have to get better at the little things.
“We have two games before district and they’re both going to be tough games to win.”
Godley is coming off a 37-6 win over Faith Christian, after losing to Ferris 20-15 in their opener.
“A win before district would be a confidence boost, but I’m not going to say either is a must-win,” Hopkins said. “District starts everything over.”
Clay Barnett gets the start at quarterback this week, in an effort to give Garrett Ragsdale more of a break from his middle linebacker position.
Barnett passed and rushed for a touchdown last week against Palmer.
Boyd will have to try and slow down Godley sophomore quarterback Ian Aguirre, who ran for 130 yards and passed for 99 against Faith Christian.
