Boyd out for revenge

Last season the Gunter Tigers ruined Brandon Hopkins’ debut as head coach of the Yellowjackets.

Boyd looks to get off to a better start in 2013 when they host Gunter Friday at Yellowjacket Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

“We’ve been doing the same things for three weeks now,” Hopkins said. “It’s game-time preparation now, so we’re ready to get rolling.”

Boyd looked sharp for the second scrimmage in a row against Lake Worth last week. The first-team offense scored a touchdown in the first set of plays, and the Yellowjackets outscored the Bullfrogs 14-13 in the live quarter.

“We are clicking pretty good right now,” Hopkins said about the offense.

Starting tailback Fino Cardona should see some openings, given the cast of players assembled around him.

“We have Qualynn [Wells] back there too and some good receivers,” Hopkins said. “People aren’t going to be able to just key on him [Cardona].”

The offensive line continues to look sharp in the preseason.

“We’ve got seven to eight guys who could potentially be starters on our line,” Hopkins said. “So we are pretty high on them.”

This is the eighth year in a row that Boyd has tangled with Gunter in the pre-district. Gunter was 10-2 and regional semifinalist in 2012. The Tigers defeated Boyd 34-27 last season, but return a small senior class from last year.

“They seem to make a run every year,” Hopkin said. “We are going to have to play hard and get after it. It will be a tough game for us.”

Gunter’s offense differs from the attacks the Yellowjackets will see most of the season.

“They will line up under center and run right at you,” Hopkins said. “They’ll get three or four yards and then try to surprise you with a bootleg.”

Hopkins feels it will be a good matchup for his defense.

“We’ve been getting to the ball and flying around,” Hopkins said. “We’ve been pretty generic so far. We’ll show some different fronts and open things up more against Gunter.”
