For the fifth straight year, the third-ranked Decatur Lady Eagles are district champions. Their sweep over Bridgeport Friday clinched District 9-3A with one game remaining.
Decatur (29-7, 7-0) swept the Sissies (7-32, 0-7) 25-7, 25-6, 25-12.
“We came out and took care of business on our side of the net,” Decatur coach Claire Benedict said. “We were effective from all attackers, we served well and had some personal goals the girls wanted to reach. I think we accomplished that during the match.”
The championship is a given, since Decatur has not lost a match or even a single set in district over the last five years.
“It’s always exciting to win district,” Benedict said. “Unfortunately, with as good as a team as we are, the excitement about that particular part of the season is not nearly as high as it used to be. Everybody expects that from us.
“Our goal is much further down the line. We celebrated, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
Makayla Mayfield led the Lady Eagles with eight kills and seven digs. Cooper Martin added seven kills and five digs.
Caroline Lowery served up a game-high six aces. Darci Billmire put down five kills and had 3 blocks.
Stormi Leonard dished out 19 assists, recorded five digs and served four aces.
“Our passing was not where it needed to be, and our offense suffered because of it,” Bridgeport coach Rebekah Cummings said.
Elaina Peyton finished with five digs and nine assists to lead the Sissies. Jessica White added four kills and two blocks.
Leah Guinn secured eight digs. Tylar Chapa notched three digs and three kills.
