Alvord was one of the few teams in the area that started the season with a victory Friday night.

The Bulldogs (1-0) rolled over Millsap and will head out on the road again for the second straight week, as they take on the Ponder Lions (0-1) Friday night at Ponder.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

“I was worried about how we would start the game with all our inexperience,” head coach Curtis Enis said about the Millsap victory. “We started great though, and Jaylon White had a long kickoff return to get us going.”

Alvord scored 21 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 31-7 victory.

Mistakes kept Alvord from padding the lead, but the defense held Millsap out of the end zone for the final three quarters.

“Our young kids up front played their tails off,” Enis said. “Our front four stayed fresh and active. We played good assignment defense.”

Offensively, Joe Randall led the running game with 165 yards and four touchdowns.

The passing game only mustered 102 yards, and Enis knows he needs more out of junior quarterback Cassidy Patterson this week against Ponder.

“Cassidy did alright after he settled down,” Enis said. “He just missed on four go-routes. He needs to improve his timing just a little bit.”

Randall rushed the ball 39 times Friday. Enis wants to see a more balanced attack this week with Randall getting around 20 touches with a few of those coming via the pass.

“We need to be a little more consistent this week offensively,” Enis said. “We’ve got to cut down on the blocking assignment mistakes and be a little more confident.”

Ponder is coming off a 35-6 loss to Muenster. The Lions have switched to more of a run-oriented offense and an aggressive style defense.

“They will run multiple offensive sets,” Enis said. “They will try to run over you and around you. Offensively we’ll have to be ready because they like to blitz a lot.”

Alvord came out of the opener injury-free and Enis hopes to get linemen Evin Beasley and David Gallagher back soon.
