A dozen Eagles sprint to regionals

After a third-place finish at the area track meet Thursday, the Decatur Eagles advanced 12 athletes to the Class 3A Region II meet in Commerce April 26-27.

Decatur came away with 90 points, finishing behind first-place Celina with 139 and second-place Sanger with 124. Bridgeport took seventh with 31.

The Eagles will send two relay teams to regionals. The mile relay team of Brandon Rivera, Michael Smyers, Travis Kyle and Grayson Muehlstein advanced with a third-place finish. The 4×200 team of Gunnar Parker, Devon Willis, Marcos Morales and Muehlstein took fourth.

Rivera also qualified in the 800 meters along with Daniel Smyers.

Parker advanced in the 100 meters and Michael Smyers advanced in the 400 meters.

Taylor Clayton is moving on after second-place finishes in the 3200 and the 1600 meter runs.

In field events Kevin Haferland advanced in the pole vault and Mason Clinesmith in the triple jump.

The Bulls mile relay team of Gabe Huerta, Jessie Smith, Jesus Soto and Gabriel Torres captured fourth place with a time of 3:30. Their 4×200 team narrowly missed regionals with a fifth-place finish.

Smith will also be advancing in the long jump along with Chase Collins.

The top four in each event advance to regionals.

Long Jump: 2. Chase Collins, Bridgeport, 19-11; 3. Jessie Smith, Bridgeport, 19-8.

Triple Jump: 3. Mason Clinesmith, Decatur, 41-0; 5. Jessie Smith, Bridgeport, 39-4.

Pole Vault: 2. Kevin Haferland, Decatur, 13-6; 6. Chad Layton, Decatur, 11-6.

3200: 2. Taylor Clayton, Decatur, 9:59.

800: 1. Brandon Rivera, Decatur, 2:01; 4. Daniel Smyers, Decatur, 2:05; 6. Bryan Hutchinson, Bridgeport, 2:09.

110 hurdles: 2. Jacob Kevetter, Decatur, 15.40.

100: 3. Gunnar Parker, Decatur, 11.31; 5. Jesus Soto, Bridgeport, 11.44.

400: 1. Michael Smyers, Decatur, 51.73.

300 hurdles: 6. Jacob Kevetter, Decatur, 44.21.

1600: 2. Taylor Clayton, Decatur, 4:38.
