Happy birthday to a great DHS teacher

{{{*}}}In the world of fast times, where sometimes we don’t even know our neighbors, it is wonderful to stop and remember those who influenced our younger lives. Having grown up in Decatur in what my class calls “the golden years” we were influenced by all of our teachers.

I met Mildred Vick my freshman year (1955-56) at DHS. She was the wife of Harold Vick, my basketball coach. Mrs. Vick was a PE teacher as well as a classroom teacher.

During my four years of high school, she was like a second mother to many of us students. I am fortunate enough to have been able to keep in touch with Mrs. Vick all through these years, even after the Vicks left Decatur.

She is a remarkable lady. This November, she will be 97 years young. She maintains her home on Lake Worth that she and Mr. Vick enjoyed all those years until his death.

Her daughters, Linda and Jane, and their families live close by and run in and out daily to check on her. I think it is remarkable that through all these years, she still takes the time and interest to call and send cards to her former students.

So, may I say “Happy Birthday!” to our beloved Mrs. Vick.

Thank you,
Ann Dawson Kaker Boerne
