A Rhome woman was killed by a wrong-way driver in Denton last weekend.

According to information provided by Orlando Hinojosa with the Denton Police Department, Amy Lynne Morrow, 55, died after being struck by a car driven by Juan E. De La Cruz Jr., 25, who had an Illinois driver’s license.

The accident happened just before 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Hinojosa said Denton Police dispatch began receiving calls at 6:20 a.m. that a man was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 in the area of the I-35E and I-35W split.

Moments later, De La Cruz’s passenger car struck Morrow’s SUV head on. Both drivers died at the scene.

Two other drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton. Wanda Sue Carter, 41, of Arlington and Najwa Francisca Lucre, 33, of Ada, Okla., have both been released from the hospital.

The northbound lanes of I-35W were shut down for about four hours.

Denton Police are still trying to determine why De La Cruz was driving the wrong way.

“It is unknown at this time if alcohol or speed were a factor in this crash,” Hinojosa stated in a press release.

Morrow worked as a surgical nurse at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.

She is survived by her husband, Dusty Morrow, four children and one grandchild.

Funeral for Morrow is 11 a.m. Thursday at Lucas Funeral Home in Justin. Family visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
