Workforce services to be offered on limited basis at WC

Leaders in Washington failed to reach a deal this week to avoid across-the-board spending cuts to federal programs, but one local victim of sequestration won’t disappear entirely.

The Decatur Workforce Solutions office closed Friday along with two other offices in the 14-county area served by Workforce Solutions of North Central Texas. Natalie Moffitt, Workforce development manager for Workforce Solutions of North Central Texas, said the agency, which runs on federal dollars, was told to reduce its budget by 10 percent in anticipation of the funding cuts, which prompted the closures.

But Workforce Solutions will continue to have a presence in Wise County thanks to an agreement with Weatherford College Wise County.

The college will provide space to Workforce Solutions two days a week. Services will be offered on Monday and Thursday by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Denton Workforce Center at 940-382-6712 and tell them you live in Wise County and would like to meet with a Workforce representative in the county. Enter through the main entrance of the college, and signs will direct you to the designated area.

The schedule could change depending on the needs of local residents.

“We’ll see how busy we are. If we need to add a day or change to a different day, we wanted to make sure we and Weatherford College Wise County have the flexibility to do that,” Moffitt said.

WCWC is also hosting the mobile Workforce Center office 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays. The 38-foot, RV-type vehicle includes 13 work stations where clients can conduct job searches or apply for positions online. The Workforce staff will also be available to help local businesses looking for employees. No appointment is necessary for the mobile center, and it is wheelchair accessible.

The new schedule will take effect next week. Moffitt said services will not be offered at the college when the campus is closed for holidays such as spring break (March 11-15) and Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.

Local residents needing to use the services of Workforce Solutions are also invited to visit the Denton Workforce Center office. That office is open with extended hours 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every other weekday. It is located at 1300 Teasley Lane in Denton.
