A woman broke free from a law officer, ran from the Wise County Adult Probation Office and eluded a search team for more than eight hours Wednesday.

Chandra J. Gooch, 27, of Newark, was at the office in downtown Decatur Wednesday morning being arrested by a Wise County deputy for revocation of probation. She was charged with possession of a dangerous drug (prescription medication without a prescription), a Class A misdemeanor.

She was in handcuffs and being led to a patrol car when she broke free around 10:15 a.m. She was spotted running through an alley on Pecan Street in Decatur before she slipped away.

“She broke free from the deputy and took off running,” said Wise County Sheriff David Walker. “She was a little faster than our guy was. I guess we need to start a physical fitness program.”

Decatur police assisted Wise County deputies in a search through downtown Decatur that lasted until early evening. At one point, a $1,500 reward was offered for her capture. She was finally located after 6 p.m. in the 200 block of East Main Street in Decatur, just a block away from where she escaped custody.

After being recaptured, a charge of escape from custody was added to the probation violation charge. As of Friday she was still in Wise County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
