A “suspicious” fire destroyed a home near Rhome Friday morning, according to Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard.

Neighbors on Private Road 4842 south of Rhome called in the fire just after 6 a.m. Rhome and Newark fire departments responded and found the mobile home fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Despite the quick response, firefighters could not save the home from being a total loss.

Beard said the home’s owners moved out on Wednesday so very few furnishings were inside the home. The owners had not been located as of Friday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

“It’s still under investigation, and it is suspicious,” Beard said.
