More than 2,000 children and parents braved the heat and made their way to the Decatur Public Library this summer to participate in the 2013 Children’s Summer Reading Program.

Over the course of eight weeks, the program saw a 60 percent increase in participation over 2012. In total, 2,686 children and adults attended the library’s free weekly performances, which included wild animals, dinosaur fossils, a juggler, live theater and more.

More than 400 children from Wise County and beyond committed to logging their summer reading, and 8-year-old Isaac Otto won a Kindle Fire after his name was drawn at random from those who completed all seven weeks of requested reading time.

Many of Wise County’s teens and tweens also accepted the challenge to track their reading all summer, with 63 participants enrolling in the library’s online Teen Summer Reading program. Teens submitted a total of 173 book reviews over the summer, with 17-year-old Alexis Downe winning the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire.

Though the hustle and bustle of summer activities at the library has ended, Youth Services Manager Abby Dozier said there are many activities and programs planned for the fall.

Storytimes start next week with preschool storytime at 10:15 a.m. every Wednesday and toddler storytime at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Dozier said teens can celebrate the opening of the movie, “Catching Fire,” the second book-turned-film in the “Hunger Games” series, and adults can choose from a variety of classes.

Adult classes for fall 2013 include the following:
