Officer loses home to fire

By Messenger Staff | Published Wednesday, June 5, 2013

An early-afternoon fire Monday heavily damaged the Montague County home of Decatur Police Sgt. Delvon Campbell.

“They lost just about everything,” said Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins.

The Bowie rural fire department answered the alarm on Llama Road, and when they arrived, they asked for assistance from the Bowie city fire department. Firefighters were at the scene for almost four hours.

“They were able to save some wedding photos and some guns,” Hoskins said. Campbell and Hoskins were in Huntsville to pick up a prisoner when the fire started. There were no injuries, Hoskins said.

A fund for the Campbell family has been established at the North Texas Bank in Decatur, and the Decatur Police Department is accepting other donations for the family.

This is the second time this year that a fire has destroyed the home of a Decatur police employee. Michael and Ashly DoByns’ home just west of Decatur was destroyed by fire Jan. 2. Ashly is a dispatcher for the Decatur PD and Michael is a former detective here.
