The “no refusal” campaign to deter drunk driving starts today in Wise County and runs through July 7.
If a driver is arrested during this time for driving while intoxicated and won’t willingly provide a breath or blood specimen, a warrant will be sought to obtain a sample of blood and test the blood-alcohol concentration.
In the weekend edition of the Wise County Messenger, a story mistakenly reported that the blood draws would occur only between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. In fact, blood draws will occur 24/7 July 3-7. They will be done at the jail between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. and at Wise Regional Health System in Decatur and Bridgeport any time outside those hours.
This is the fifth year County Attorney James Stainton has organized the effort.
“We’re trying to bring awareness to the situation,” he said. “You can drink. You can party. Just don’t drive. It’s as simple as it can be.”
