ALVORD

KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP – Alvord Elementary is having pre-kindergarten and kindergarten roundup 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. through Thursday, May 16. For pre-kindergarten, children need to be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2013, and for kindergarten, 5 years old by Sept. 1. Parents should bring their child’s Social Security card, birth certificate, immunization record and proof of residency in the Alvord School District. BRIDGEPORT

GIVING BACK – Organizers of Bridgeport Gives Back are looking for volunteers to help with various community service projects today through Sunday, May 19. Projects include construction and home maintenance for neighbors in need, nursing facility outreach, supporting special needs baseball players, assisting the elderly with smoke alarm safety and recognizing local educators. 3-ON-3 – Bridgeport Class of 2017 is having a three-on-three basketball tournament 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Bridgeport Middle School. Check-in is at 8. Fourth graders through adults are eligible to enter, and divisions may be combined if there is a lack of entries. Cost is $100 per team, youth or adult. DECATUR

ALUMNI FUNDRAISER -Decatur FFA Alumni is having its awards dinner and silent auction 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the DHS cafeteria. A barbecue meal, provided by Wise Electric Co-op, is free – but they hope to raise $5,000 through the auction and general donations. Proceeds benefit scholarships and help alleviate expenses for FFA members traveling to contests. The featured item in the auction is a spring turkey or hog hunt for four in LaSalle County.

HELP ALLSUP WIN – After being nominated by his students, Decatur High School ag teacher, Jim Allsup, has been named one of 12 finalists in the Justin Boots All-Star Ag Teacher Contest. Help him win the title, $5,000 and a pair of boots by voting for him through the month of May at www.facebook.com/justinboots/app_358967940887043.

RELAY FIREFIGHTERS – To signify the weight cancer patients and their families carry, members of the Decatur Fire Department will walk laps in full protective ensemble for $25 at Relay For Life of Wise County on Friday, May 17. The firefighter’s Relay team is also selling T-shirts for $20. To sponsor a lap or order a shirt, contact any Decatur firefighter or stop by the station at 1705 S. State St.

LAKE BRIDGEPORT

CLEANUP DAY – The Lake Bridgeport Cleanup is 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at various points along the lake. Volunteers will receive supply kits and free T-shirts and are invited to a post-cleanup celebration with lunch, prizes and entertainment, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To register, fill out the form at www.trwd.com or call 817-335-2491.

SLIDELL

FFA PLANTS – Slidell FFA is selling plants. Super petunias, geraniums and coleus are $2 per plant, or $36 for a flat of 18. Hanging baskets are $10, and marigolds, petunias, gazanias and zinnias are $14 per flat. Call the agriculture department for details at 940-466-3881, extension 229.

WISE COUNTY

FIGHTING CANCER – Relay For Life of Wise County is Friday, May 17, at the old Decatur High School track (on Thompson Street). A reception for survivors is at 6 p.m., followed by the first lap at 7 p.m. and a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. The event also includes contests, live entertainment, concessions and other fundraisers before activities wrap up around 7 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

WEST RELIEF – The Decatur and Bridgeport chambers of commerce, along with Wise County-Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will collect donations through Friday, May 17, for the victims of the explosions in West. Drop off checks at either chamber’s office, the Extension office or any local Legend, First Financial or First State Bank branch. Legend Bank will also accept cash donations.

BENEFIT PERFORMANCE – The Artisan Center Theater will perform “The Hiding Place” (the Corrie ten Boom Story) at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Wise County Heritage Museum theater in Decatur. All proceeds will benefit relief efforts in West. Eve Roberts of Wise County is directing the production, and Judi Conger of Runaway Bay will play Corrie ten Boom. Other local actors include Cathy Lackey of Decatur and Rick and Andrea Duwe of Greenwood. Rebecca Roberts of Decatur is the theater’s resident costumer. Tickets can be purchased for a $10 donation, and an offering will be collected at the performance. Call 817-284-1200 for reservations and tickets.

DEMOCRATS MEETING
The Wise County Democrats meet 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Wise County Sheriff’s Office courtroom, 200 Rook Ramsey, Dr. in Decatur.

PBR TICKETS – Tickets for the J.W. Hart PBR Challenge are available at Wise Wireless in Decatur and at wcchallenger.org. The event is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds in Decatur.

NORTHWEST ISD

MUSICAL AUDITIONS – Auditions for the 2013-2014 NISD middle school musical, “Willy Wonka Jr.,” are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Northwest High School, 2301 Texan Dr., in Justin. The musical will feature students from all five of the district’s middle schools, and the auditions are open to any NISD student in fifth- through seventh-grade. Callbacks are 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Chisholm Trail Middle School, 583 FM 3433, in Rhome. Rehearsals will be Aug. 12-30 at CTMS, and performances are scheduled for Sept. 13-14.
