NTCH SCHOLARSHIPS – The Volunteer Auxiliary of Bridgeport’s North Texas Community Hospital will award five $1,000 scholarships to continuing education students, high school students, employees and children of employees of NTCH and individuals with a Wise County address. The Auxiliary encourages individuals to further their education in the medical field as physicians, nurses and laboratory technicians, as well as in hospital administration or social work. CLAY SHOOT – The 6th Annual Barnett Shale Sporting Clay Shoot benefiting the Bridgeport Visitor Center is Thursday, April 25, at Northwest OHV Park, 2914 Texas 101, in Bridgeport. There will be a morning flight at 9 a.m. and afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon. Fee is $100 per person or $500 for a five-man team. BUTTERFIELD BOOTHS – The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications through May 3 for vendor booths for the Butterfield Stage Days Festival, which is Saturday, May 11, at Harwood Park. Fees for members are $50 for food/drink spaces without electricity or $55 with electricity; and $20 for art/craft/merchandise/game booths without electricity or $25 with electricity. For non-members, food/drink booths are $100 without electricity or $110 with electricity; and $40 for art/craft/merchandise/game set-ups without electricity or $50 with electricity. WISE HOOPS – The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 11th Annual Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament is Friday, March 22, at the Multi-Purpose Building at McCarroll Middle School. Play begins at 5 p.m., and divisions range from fifth- and sixth-grade girls and boys to men’s, women’s and co-ed. Registration is $140 per adult team and $100 per youth team. EASTER EVENT – The Main Street Easter Event is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, on the southeast corner of the Decatur Square. There will be a fun jump, face-painting, barrel train and pictures with the Easter bunny. VACCINES – Texas Department of State Health Services is having a children’s vaccination clinic 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at First United Methodist Church in Decatur. BUNNY VISITS NEWARK – The 3rd Annual Newark Community Easter Egg Hunt is 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 23, at Town Square Park, 209 Hudson St. There will be more than 2,000 candy-filled eggs, plus games, prizes, food, pictures with the Easter Bunny and nine grand prize baskets for those who find prize eggs. The hunt will be divided into age groups: 0 to 4; 5 to 8; and 9 to 12. If a child doesn’t have a basket, organizers suggest he or she come early and decorate a bag before the hunt begins.


SAMANTHA ROGERS SCHOLARSHIP – Applications for the 2013 Samantha Jill Rogers Scholarship are available online at or by emailing The scholarship is open to all Wise County graduating seniors.

MANCIL SCHOLARSHIP – Essays for the Delaney Mancil Scholarship are now being accepted. Scholarship applications are open to all senior FFA and 4-H members of Wise County. Send essays to 1703 S. Hubbard St., Alvord, TX 76225 before April 22. Essays will also be accepted from continuing education students from Wise County.

EGG HUNT – The Wise County Sheriff’s Office annual Easter egg hunt is 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Decatur Civic Center. Food and drinks will be provided. Bring a basket for hunting and a camera for photos with the Easter bunny.

LOCAL THESPIANS – Six Wise County thespians are involved in the Artisan Center Theater’s production of “The Hiding Place” 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 3 p.m. Saturdays from Thursday, March 21, to Saturday, April 20, at the theater, 420 E. Pipeline Rd. in Hurst. The Tuesday, March 26, show will be interpreted for the deaf and hearing impaired. Eve Roberts of Wise County is directing the production, and Judi Conger of Runaway Bay will play Corrie ten Boom, one of the lead roles. Other local actors include Cathy Lackey of Decatur and Rick and Andrea Duwe of Greenwood. Rebecca Roberts of Decatur is the theater’s resident costumer.

CANCER SURVIVORS – Local cancer survivors and caregivers are encouraged to register with Relay For Life of Wise County. Those registered will be invited to a dinner Thursday, April 18, and will be honored during opening ceremonies of the all-night walking event Friday, May 17. HOME AND GARDEN – Wise County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is hosting a Spring Home and Garden Series starting later this month. The four-week program is 3 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday, starting March 26 and running through April 16, at the Extension office in Decatur, 206 S. State St. Cost is $40 for the entire series or $15 per seminar. Topics that will be addressed include vegetable gardening, fruit and nut tree management, turf management and landscape trees.
