TEEN READING – The Alvord Public Library will host a Teen Reading Club Wednesday, July 24, through Wednesday, Aug. 21 for adolescents entering the 7th through 12th grades. At any point during the month-long event, go to the library at 106 Franklin St. to register, complete a reading log, suggest books to add to the library’s collection and recommend books to other teens. There will be goodies available, and each participant will be entered in a drawing for a Google Play gift card at the end of the program.

WATERMELON PAGEANT – Register for the Alvord Watermelon Pageant now through Monday, Aug. 5 by contacting Megan Adams at 940-626-0586 or The pageant is Saturday, Aug. 10, at Elm Creek Park Pavilion in Alvord. Check-in time is 9:30 a.m., and the pageant is at 10 a.m. Entry fee is $20. Proceeds go to the Library Restoration Fund and the Alvord Volunteer Fire Department. Categories are 0-23 months, 2-3 years, 4-6 years and 7-9 years. Girls and boys are invited to participate.


LITTLE LIBRARY – Free Little Library in Boyd is now open outside the Boyd ISD Early Childhood Building (behind Allsup’s). It’s open to the public, and the books are free. You can take one and leave one at any time. The community project is organized by Texas Neighborhood Services-Head Start Boyd to promote school readiness for children under 5.


PIRATE PARTY – Bridgeport city pool will host a pirate party 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 25. Cost is $2. For more information, call 940-683-3480.

HISTORIC DEDICATION – A dedication ceremony for a historical marker placed for the Santa Fe Expedition on U.S. 380 (across from the Greystone Inn in Bridgeport) is 10 a.m. Friday, July 26.

LATE-NIGHT SWIM – Bridgeport city pool will open until 11 p.m. Saturday, July 27. Cost is $2.

CHAMBER LUAU – The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Hawaiian luau for its members 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Bridgeport Country Club. RSVP by Friday, July 26, at or 940-683-2076.


BRISKET FUNDRAISER – The Chico Volunteer Fire Department is selling briskets for $50 each. To purchase one, call Chico City Hall at 940-644-2435.


BUG OUT – Decatur Public Library will present a hands-on program about bugs and how they eat, 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25, for elementary-aged children. TALENT SHOW – Registration for the Wise Country Fall Out will be accepted through Friday, Aug. 2, at the Wise County Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St. in Decatur. This talent show contest awards cash payouts to the top three performers as selected by a panel of judges. The show is scheduled for a Saturday night in November with auditions on two Saturdays in August. Twelve participants are needed to produce the show. FAN DRIVE – The Wise County Committee on Aging is holding its second annual summer fan drive to distribute to seniors in need. Drop off your donations at Angels Care Home Health, Senior Care Health and Rehabilitation and the WCCA office, all in Decatur.

FERAL HOG CLINIC – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Livestock & Forage Committee will host a Feral Hog Appreciation Day clinic 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Bridgeport Community Center. Pre-registration is $25, and cost at the door is $35. CEUs for Pesticide Applicator Licenses will be given, and lunch is provided. SHOT CLINIC – Texas Department of State Health Services will have an immunization clinic 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at First United Methodist Church, 104 South Miller, in Decatur. Enter through the fellowship hall on Miller Street, and go to rooms 103 and 105. A parent must be present with the child’s shot record. Cost is $10 per child or $20 per family. RANCHER’S GATHERING – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Livestock & Forage Committee will host John Bradshaw from the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to speak about property theft prevention. The program is 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the First Baptist Church Decatur. Cost is $10 per person and includes dinner. There will be more than 20 booths and lots of door prizes. BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR – Northwest ISD Partners in Education and Heavenly Supply Depot, will host a Back to School Fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Northwest High School. The following free services will be offered: backpacks and school supplies (only for families who pre-register); health screenings and health insurance information; dental information, toothbrushes and toothpaste; vision screenings; haircuts; and sports physicals; There will also be games and activities, financial aid workshops and college/university/trade school information, community resource booths and information on NISD services. COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL OPENING – A ribbon cutting ceremony for Shears of Steele Cosmetology Salon is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at James M. Steele Accelerated High School, 606 N. Walnut St., in Roanoke. The cosmetology academy provides firsthand experiences in hair, nails and skincare as well as business and entrepreneurship trainings.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE – NISD Partners in Education (PIE) is organzing a Stuff The Bus school supply drive to ensure all NISD students have the tools they need for school success. PIE is asking community members to host school supply drives at their businesses and places of worship, or donate school supplies at the NISD Administration Building 2001 Texan Drive, in Justin. ONLINE REGISTRATION – Students new to Northwest ISD may enroll online at Registration for returning students begins Aug. 1. The process will replace the back-to-school packets issued on the first day of school.

CRAFT SHOW VENDORS – Vendors are sought for the Northwest High School baseball team’s Fall Craft Show 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Northwest High School. Booth fees, which include a chair, helpers to unload, parking and wifi, are $75 for a 10 10 space or $140 for 10 20. Additions include electricity for $10; tables for $10; and chairs for $5. TECH ALUMNI – The Cooke County chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association will hold its annual luncheon 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Landmark Bank Conference Center in Gainesville.
