Department of Public Safety Trooper William Wallace said James McDonald and his passenger, Frederick Ferren, were northbound on 2265 in a pickup, towing a small flatbed trailer, when they went onto the shoulder to pass a line of cars that was stopped to turn left onto Texas 101.

McDonald turned right onto 101, but collided with an 18-wheeler carrying water, turning left on 101 from the southbound direction. The accident was reported at around 9:20 a.m.

The tanker was driven by Anthony McNeely of Azle, who was not injured.

Ferren was taken to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur with hip injuries, then later transferred by air ambulance to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth.

McDonald had to be cut out of the wreckage. He was taken to Wise Regional Decatur with a possible leg injury and a broken arm. Both men were in stable condition, Wallace said after checking on them that afternoon.
