A 75-year-old man recently indicted for aggravated sexual assault of a child was found dead in his bed on the day he was supposed to turn himself over to authorities.
Martin E. Abendschein was discovered about 9:15 a.m. on Monday, July 1, just days after a Wise County grand jury had indicted him on one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and a count of indecency with a child, both second-degree felonies.
The incidents allegedly occurred in October 2002 in Wise County. The victim was an 8-year-old girl at the time.
After hiding the alleged assault for more than a decade, the victim revealed to a school counselor that the assault had taken place. Investigators with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney’s office got involved.
“He was very cooperative,” said Investigator Josh Reynolds with the Sheriff’s Office. “We interviewed him, and he was supposed to come in to take a polygraph test, but he had a massive heart attack.”
Abendschein was already a registered sex offender. He was convicted of indecency with a child by sexual contact in 1995 in Travis County. His victim was a 9-year-old girl. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
But when investigators were set to arrest Abendschein on this second round of allegations, his wife found him dead in bed at their home in the 100 block of Table Salt Court, located in southwest Wise County.
Investigators are still awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death, but an empty bottle of heart medication was discovered by his bed.
